    Hi everyone

Would really appreciate some advice from more experienced owners of the border collie, I brought a blue merle at 9 weeks old from someone I knew and on the 10 of October she will be 2, she’s loving and loyal and everything you could want from a dog but how ever hard I try I can’t stop her from urinating and pooing in her bed area where she is, the person I got her from never let the puppies out to start to learn to wee and learn from mum and they used the house as a toilet, I know I should of walked away but I brought her and has I’ve had dogs in the past and never had trouble toilet training them and she was young it would be no different, how wrong I was, even though the back door is open and she does go to toilet outside she will still come in on quite a few occasions and poo in her own bed or wee all over the floor, I’ve spoke with my vet about it but there not really sure why she is doing this, I don’t make a big deal out of it and just clean it up as I don’t want her to think she’s getting my attention over it, I’ve tried everything I can think of that’s worked with other puppies I have had and at nearly 2 she still hasn’t got it, I love her to pieces but I am finding it hard now , please has anyone got any advice , thank you xx

    Hi Jennifer!

Firstly, well done so far in not giving up on her, and also checking in with the vet to clear off any health issues.

I would ideally like more information about her, but to save time I will go by what you've mentioned above. Of course, every dog is different and could be something specific to her history, but I believe a refresh + new structure would go a long way for her. Collies can fixate on specific behaviours and make their own minds up when they have the freedom, so a little bit of guidance will let her know exactly what her job is.

I would suggest temporarily Crate training her, and scheduling her day so you have control over her potty experience - you can associate commands and where to do her potty, so she has clear instructions. Remember, lots of praise and fun when she does a good job. Soon, she will make it a habit and you can ease up on the praise and fun.

I have kept it VERY short, but I can expand a lot more on the above if you would like more reading!

Hope this helps you, all the best!
